PALM OIL
Doctor Bongo's Palm Oil Wood
Treatment is an original blend of African crude palm oil,
Malaysian purified palm oil, and beeswax specially
formulated for African drum shells. It is equally
suitable for refinishing any fine oil rubbed wood
furnishings.
Most drum shells imported from
Africa have been treated with palm oil to seal the wood
against moisture, preventing shrinkage and cracks. This
treatment evaporates very slowly and needs to be
replenished from time to time to ensure that the wood
does not dry out and allow moisture to enter. It is the
repeated cycle of moisture entry and drying that causes
wood to crack, the worst thing that can happen to a drum
short of rolling into the campfire..
This all natural non-toxic palm oil
product uses no flammable petroleum derivatives and is
easy to apply with no mess. Just wipe it on, let it
penetrate over night and wipe off any excess. Detailed
instructions are included on the label.
In addition to penetrating deeply to
preserve and nourish the wood it also enriches the wood's
natural color and produces an attractive, buffable satin
sheen. Unlike surface coatings, it can't crack, chip or
peel, will not show light scratches, and can be quickly
and easily touched up to keep your drum looking it's best
year after year.
Doctor Bongo's Palm Oil Wood
Treatment needs to penetrate into the wood to work and so
is not recommended over varnishes, lacquers, or other
surface coatings, but it is compatible with wood that has
been sealed with linseed oil or other oils. One 9 ounce
jar is enough to double coat all surfaces of two average
djembes.
