The Aegis Thunderhead™ 1 Hour Djembe & Ashiko Head Replacement Kit contains:
- One goatskin head, prestretched under nearly 4000 pounds of pressure. (This may seem like a lot, but that's what it takes.)
- Two 1/4" mig welded rings of cold rolled steel. Primed to prevent rust.
- Twelve feet of 4mm double braided Dacron djembe rope. Black.
- Full assembly instructions. (very very simple)
Selecting the size you need:
Select the size of head you need by either measuring the Outside Diameter of your djembe or ashiko's bearing edge or the Inside Diameter of the top steel ring.
Thunderheads are available in four sizes to fit most drums and custom sizes can be special ordered by inquiring to: info@bongocentral.com
The available sizes are arranged by Ring Clearance Diameter as follows:
- 12.5" Ring Clearance (fits 11.5 - 12.25" rim)
- 13.5" Ring Clearance (fits 12 - 13.25" rim)
- 14" Ring Clearance (fits 13 - 13.75" rim)
- 15" Ring Clearance (fits 13.75 - 14.75" rim)
This ring clearance is the Inside Diameter of the mounted Thunderhead's flesh ring. So if, for example, you measured your drum's bearing edge diameter to be 13-1/4 inches across then a 13-1/2 inch Thunderhead will fit. But that would be a tight fit, leaving only 1/8" between the ring and the drum shell. It is for this reason that you should be sure to measure the largest diameter on the drum.. Many hand crafted drums are more oval than circular and will have a maximum diameter as well as other diameters. Use the big one.
If you measured the Inside Diameter of your top ring then select a Thunderhead size which is closest to that measurement without being larger. The Aegis Thunderhead Djembe & Ashiko Head Replacement Kit includes an second matching steel ring and rope in case you need to knot a new top ring.
Aegis Thunderheads are available in two styles.
No Hair: The goat skin has been hand shaved cleanly and the edges trimmed off tight at the top ring.
With Hair: The goatskin has been hand shaved cleanly but a decorative 3 inch skirting of natural haired skin is left hanging over the top ring.
All Aegis Thunderheads for djembes and ashikos are made in a medium thickness which most players seem to like. Thin heads and thick heads can be special ordered by inquiring to: info@bongocentral.com

We will replace any Aegis Thunderhead™ within 1 year of purchase for any damage to the head resulting from a manufacturing defect or original flaw in the goatskin, free of charge. Just ship us your damaged head, at your expense, and we will replace it immediately, at our expense.
